charity groups and individuals who reached out to those in need and shared food with the hungry. All across America, police have been arresting nice people for being kind to those less fortunate. Arresting, jailing fining and criminalizing people for helping their fellow man. In one case, even pouring bleach on food to prevent it from being given to hungry people in need. This is today’s police industry. For all of the “blue worship” and first responder praise for doing a tough job, those supporting the police industry seem to overlook the dark side of policing. The side that would arrest a person for sharing food with another starving human being. It is unfathomable to imagine someone seeing a person be kind to others in need and think “I better get over there and put a stop to that”. How do you begin to make that thought process? What kind of person does it take to make that dark leap in reasoning? For some reason, being a cop seems to make that type of decision easy for them. As sheriff of Pinellas County in 2020, I will put an end to “quality of life” arrests. There will be no more criminalizing the homeless, arresting people for being kind and just plain making things harder for people who already have it hard enough as it it. I will also be developing and implementing multiple programs through the Sheriff’s Office to HELP the homeless through job training and a small home building project using the funds currently being wasted on marijuana enforcement.
